Are you planning a trip to the United Kingdom? Soon, it won’t be possible without electronic authorization!

The United States has its ESTA, the European Union countries are anticipating the arrival of the ETIAS system, and this year the UK is expanding the scope of countries that will require ETA. What are we talking about? Digital border control and entry authorization systems, without which entry to these countries will not be possible. The date when the requirement for ETA will also apply to EU citizens is fast approaching. Are you ready for it?

Where? Since when?
ESTA To USA 2009
ETIAS To EU countries Planned for 2025
ETA To the UK For EU from April 2025

What is an ETA and who cannot do without it? ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital entry permit for the countries of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) for short-term travel. The permit is primarily intended for travelers who plan to stay in the UK for up to 6 months, for purposes such as tourism, visiting friends, or business trips. The main goal is to have more stable control over who is entering the country. Initially, this requirement applied only to citizens of certain Arab countries, specifically Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, who have had this obligation since 2023. Since then, the list of countries has gradually expanded. From January this year, this requirement applies to citizens of the USA, Canada, and Australia, and from April 2, it will also apply to citizens of EU countries, with the application process starting on March 5. Foreigners who are subject to visa requirements or have other entry authorizations, as well as holders of British and Irish passports, do not need to secure timely authorization for entry.

What is needed to successfully obtain an ETA?

Applicants need a valid travel document, an email address, a digital photograph, and a debit or credit card. Applications can be submitted directly on the UK government website or via the “UK ETA” application.

How much does it cost and how long does it take to process?

The application fee is £10, and each applicant, including infants and children, must apply separately. Once an application is submitted, no refunds can be requested.

Decisions are usually made within three working days.

How long is an ETA valid?

The authorization is valid for 2 years and is linked to a specific passport. In case of obtaining a new travel document, a new ETA application must be made.

What does this mean for hassle-free travel?

In 2025, other countries like Australia, South Korea, Israel, Belarus, and Thailand will also introduce digital border control systems. This new requirement represents a significant change in travel and business travel planning for most employees. The days of simply crossing borders with just a passport are coming to an end. Instead, companies should consider integrating border control systems into their standard travel procedures, which requires careful planning and systematic monitoring of these new digital permissions.
