Even though the success rate of such attacks is low, there is one target group that is most jeopardised by these attacks: senior citizens. Suspicious Addresses and Poor Spelling
So what are the indicators to pay attention to when revealing fraud e-mails? There are a wide range of clues on how to identify such messages. Let us name instances such as the e-mail address itself that seems inappropriate already at first sight; poor language of the message alone; questionable link addresses in the e-mail’s body that forward the e-mail recipient to other, non-trusted websites; attachments that include suspicious (for example executable) files, and other. According to Marek, a sufficient approach is to be careful when reading your e-mails and to pay attention to the above factors. In this way, the chance that the recipient gets tricked drops significantly.
Scam 419: Nigerian Letters
“The Prince of Nigeria got in trouble and needs you to send him money so that he can flee the country. As soon as he gets to a safe place, not only will he refund the money to you, but, he will pay you back a thousand times.“
No doubt, everyone has already encountered this attempted fraud in their e-mail inbox. On the Internet, this type of fraud is known as Nigerian Letters or scam 419, a term used by cyber security experts. Of surprise is the history of this type of fraud, that goes back no closer than to the 18th century.
At the club meeting, the members had a chance to take part in a contest. They were supposed to send in a short essay on their first encounter with modern technologies. The winner was awarded with a cake and a book covering this topic. At the end of the session, the attendees had a chance to discuss the particular issues they face when using their own technology, be it smartphones or computers.
