Adaptation-integration courses – who is obliged to attend them?

Effective from January 2021, there has been a new obligation to attend adaptation-integration courses for newly arriving foreign nationals from non-EU / non-EEA countries who have a long-term residence in the Czech Republic and plan to stay in the country for more than a year.

The aim of these 4-hour courses is to provide newly arriving foreign nationals with practical latest information that can make their contact with the Czech society easier and help them better understand their rights and obligations in the Czech Republic.

Who specifically is obliged to attend these courses?

  • Foreign nationals with a long-term residence in the Czech Republic (e.g. employee card, blue card, long-term stay for the purpose of family reunification)
  • Foreign nationals with a long-term residence under Section 66 or Section 67 (humanitarian reasons and international protection)
  • Foreign nationals who were issued a new long-term residence permit due to the change in the residence purpose on the territory of the Czech Republic

The obligation does not apply to:

  • Students
  • Holders of the Intra-Corporate Transfer card
  • Holders of long-term residence for investment purposes
  • Foreign nationals whose stay in the Czech Republic was approved through a government programme (Key and Research Staff Programme, Highly Qualified Worker Programme); this exception only applies to “labour migrants”, not their family members
  • Foreign nationals under 15 years or over 61 years of age

The adaptation-integration courses will take place from March 2021 in the Centres for Support of Integration of Foreigners. The courses will be held in Czech and interpreted into 9 languages (English, Arabic, French, Mongolian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese). The price of one course will be CZK 1,500 and after its completion, the foreign national will receive a certificate which they will then submit to the Ministry of the Interior.

After a prior approval of the Ministry of the Interior and in cooperation with a Centre for Support of Integration of Foreigners, employers will be entitled to hold adaptation-integration courses in their premises as well. We are now gathering more information about this option and will soon bring you more details.
